Van Kade tot Zelfkant is a community art project that took place in the Singelpark in Leiden in the summer of 2022. Sara Vrugt and Nina Mathijsen made saai, a traditional fabric from the city of Leiden, in their mobile studio. A supple woolen fabric that brought great wealth to the city in the 17th century. They did not do this alone: everyone who was interested in these age-old textile techniques was allowed to help. The project resulted not only in ten meters of fabric, but also in a publication (bound in saddle stitch with self-spun thread) and an exhibition designed by us.

Since the closing ceremony in Museum De Lakenhal, the cloth has been hanging, made by many hands, as a silent witness to a community art project that was carried out with much love and care. The historical research, the queest for the right techniques, the reuse of materials and the interest in the people who worked with them: in everything that Nina and Sara did, there is an honest involvement with people and their environment. From that involvement, Van Kade tot Zelfkant tells the story of Leiden as a city of textiles and migrants in its own unique way, as a shared experience about Leiden, its history and our future.
