During the Corona crisis, it bacame clear who keeps our country running when public life comes to a standstill. These are the healthcare providers, teachers, postal workers, cleaners, distribution workers and many others with a crucial profession. Although the work that these people is indispensable to our society, they often do not receive the appreciation and respect that you would expect. While they suffered the blows of the crisis, they were not rewarded with higher salaries and more security.

The FNV (Labour Union) therefore started a campaign for the essential workers. The demands include a minimum wage of 14 euros per hour, less work pressure and less uncertainty. During the ‘Dag van de Onmisbaren’ (Day of the Essential Workers), the Night Watch of Crucial Workers was unveiled. A contemporary version of the famous painting by Rembrandt van Rijn, intended as an ode to the 3.5 million people with crucial professions who have kept our country afloat over the past two years.

The minimum wage is currently rising, but in practice this amounts to less than an additional euro per hour in 2025. The fight for a decent wage and greater social security for the essential workers does not end here.
