Why is everyone against bureaucracy and yet we get more and more of it? To answer this question we need to think about the nature of bureaucracy. This turns out to be more complicated than it seems: like an octopus, bureaucracy escapes anyone who wants to get grip on it. It has, so to speak, the nature of a ‘hyperobject’, something so all-encompassing that we can never get the complete picture of it in our minds, as René ten Bos explains in the first Cokky Kraaij lecture, for which we created the publication.
