Ter ere van de geboorte van Lou maakten we een geboortebladzijde, dubbelzijdig, met scheurrand.

Vorige week werden we gespot in de Wittevrouwenstraat toen we onze fotografie uit onder andere Iran, Pakistan en Jemen aan het uitzetten waren, welke we twee jaar geleden nog lekker ouderwets exposeerde aan de muren van het stadhuis in Utrecht. Klem achter regenpijpen, onder electriciteitsbuizen en tussen struiken is door het hele centrum van Utrecht deze guerilla-expo te bekijken, en voor liefhebbers mee te nemen. I’ve been working recently with al Jazeera’s live streaming thumbnail somewhere on my screen, being quite interested in the well-being of the people on Tahrir square. Can’t help remembering the month Nina and me spent in Caïro a couple of years ago. We made this picture there, grafitti on a wall. I guess today is the day to repost the picture. Not so long ago Detour started as a traveling project. It took us a little over two years to get all the way overland and sea from Bangladesh as furthest landmark to the east back to the Netherlands, through Afghanistan and Iran via the Arabian Peninsula and east Africa to Israël and the occupied Palestinian territories. This is the last week of our photography exposition in the city hall of Utrecht, NL. Besides photography we show printed matter we made during our travels.

is onze ode aan de Soefi-drummer (dholia) Goonga Sain uit het Pakistaanse Lahore. Goonga Sain, doof geboren, leerde als kind complexe ritmes doordat zijn vader op zijn rug trommelde.

Op woensdag 1 juli 2009 om half vijf presenteren wij in het stadhuis van Utrecht onze uitgave uitgevoerd in lino & zeefdruk aan het publiek, in gelimiteerde en genummerde oplage getititeld: ‘het Dholhuis’ {ISBN 978-94-90296-01-8} Het beeld, een poëtische vertaling van de donderdagnachten waar Goonga Sain samen met zijn broer Mithu Sain een spectaculaire percussie sessie verzorgt bij het graf van de heilige Baba Shah Jamal. Het publiek, uitzinnig van vreugde, danst, wervelt terwijl het ritme van de drum de nacht naar een hoogtepunt leidt. De cd, die de uitgave vergezelt, bevat een live opname van de jumeraat, de donderdag nacht.

Daarnaast opent de fotoexpositie: “Van Bangladesh naar Bosnië”, de islamitische wereld gezien door de ogen van twee jonge ontwerpers, en exposeren we grafisch & illustratief werk gemaakt tijdens onze twee-jarige reis door de islamitische wereld.

We like to give you a sneak preview of a project we are working on; The topic of our story, the deaf and mute dhol player Goonga Sain from Lahore, Pakistan. Although he was born deaf, he is considered by a lot of people as the prominent master of the genre. We came in contact with him about a year ago during our extensive travel in the subcontinent, and decided to make a tribute to him. Last thursday it finally happened (it was extremely difficult to create the right environment for the recording because of this night actually being a religious ceremony): a special recording session was arranged at the sufi shrine of Baba Shah Jamal where he and his brother Mithu Sain perform every thursday night, the night before the holy friday.

At the same time in the Netherlands, while Nina is listening to the hypnotic beating of the drum, she is working on a giant linocut.
