Vorige week woensdag vond de boekpresentatie plaats van het boek “mehman” wat gast betekent in Farsi. Het boek is in een beperkte oplage (65 exemplaren) verschenen en gemaakt door eerstejaars studenten van de HKU. Wij ontvingen een uitnodiging van Albert Hennipman van de Ruimte ontwerpers om een bijdrage te leveren aan het project dat als overkoepelend thema reizen had. Uiteindelijk was de verschijningsvorm een in vilt opgerold boek, samengebonden in verzaagde delen van de houtsnedes die werden gebruikt voor het binnenwerk van het boek. Tjokvol prachtige letterbeelden. Joppe van Dijk, één van de studenten maakte deze video welke een sfeerbeeld schetst van de totstandkoming van het boek. Fotografie door de Ruimte ontwerpers.

This poster we made during our travels in central Iran. It’s our interpretation of the famous Persian carpets (yes, we’re fans and are lucky to live on a couple of beautiful Bachtiari flat woven kilims). It’s folded to the size of a postcard and our friend Babak, owner of this very carpet store, uses them as business cards. Word from Iran is that he’s selling a lot more carpets lately…

Not so long ago Detour started as a traveling project. It took us a little over two years to get all the way overland and sea from Bangladesh as furthest landmark to the east back to the Netherlands, through Afghanistan and Iran via the Arabian Peninsula and east Africa to Israël and the occupied Palestinian territories. This is the last week of our photography exposition in the city hall of Utrecht, NL. Besides photography we show printed matter we made during our travels.

is onze ode aan de Soefi-drummer (dholia) Goonga Sain uit het Pakistaanse Lahore. Goonga Sain, doof geboren, leerde als kind complexe ritmes doordat zijn vader op zijn rug trommelde.

Op woensdag 1 juli 2009 om half vijf presenteren wij in het stadhuis van Utrecht onze uitgave uitgevoerd in lino & zeefdruk aan het publiek, in gelimiteerde en genummerde oplage getititeld: ‘het Dholhuis’ {ISBN 978-94-90296-01-8} Het beeld, een poëtische vertaling van de donderdagnachten waar Goonga Sain samen met zijn broer Mithu Sain een spectaculaire percussie sessie verzorgt bij het graf van de heilige Baba Shah Jamal. Het publiek, uitzinnig van vreugde, danst, wervelt terwijl het ritme van de drum de nacht naar een hoogtepunt leidt. De cd, die de uitgave vergezelt, bevat een live opname van de jumeraat, de donderdag nacht.

Daarnaast opent de fotoexpositie: “Van Bangladesh naar Bosnië”, de islamitische wereld gezien door de ogen van twee jonge ontwerpers, en exposeren we grafisch & illustratief werk gemaakt tijdens onze twee-jarige reis door de islamitische wereld.

Wednesday 25th of March we gave a lecture on graphic design, traveling, semiotics, passion and a combination of the previously mentioned aspects at the Utrecht School of the Arts in their Studium Generale series. Excited about the fact to see a poster designed by a student of the HKU announcing our presence, it was the first time we actually made an (almost) chronological story about our two years+ on the road. Although it was obviously inspiring for at least some people, it was even more surprising for us to look back in retrospect and see what impact it had on the life we are living now and how it shaped our dreams. So for the last time I’ll quote Mark Twain: ‘Twenty years from now you’ll be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.’

Wallets made from recycled canvas, originally used for the roofs of bicycle-rickshaws. Rickshaw artists aim to decorate the vehicles with as much drama and color as possible, and paint images that are both simple and memorable. This is street art for the ordinary man, and it’s unashamedly commercial. Tangail, where we photographed this very rickshaw art is famous in Bangladesh for its decorations.
